Growth is the goal, not perfection.

“Comparison is the thief of joy.”
– Theodore Roosevelt

It’s my impression that as women we are fed a narrative by the beauty industry and social media that perfection is attainable if you do/buy xyz. There’s nothing wrong with seeking perfection, but I believe that we need to change our mindset when we are on our health and beauty journeys to one of growth and improvement, not perfection.

It’s so easy to hold ourselves to unrealistic standards or compare ourselves to others. But in my experience, I’ve found the greatest attitude to adopt when it comes to losing weight, skincare, or any form of self-care is a growth mindset, not a perfection mindset. Perfection implies there is no room for flaw, no room for mistake. It is an illusion that actually holds us back from recognizing and enjoying the journey we are taking ourselves on.

I propose a change of perspective to one of slow living, subtle change, and ultimately appreciation for ourselves as we make choices that make our lives better. Self-care journeys are deeply personal and the things we can learn about ourselves are plentiful, if we only slow down long enough to listen.

So embrace your “flaws”, and let them inspire appreciation for the amazing things you accomplish in spite of them, and even because of them. Find the balance in your life and your body, and seek to understand your limitations, not judge them. They are a part of who you are, and they deserve recognition, too.

Never forget that you matter and that YOU are the main character in your life. Throw away the excuses and the self-doubt, and grab your life by the horns. Now is your time, and you have the power to become the best version of yourself. Your power comes from within, so be kind to yourself, and be your own biggest ally in life.
